Castle Rock sits right on the Cowlitz River at Exit 49 off I-5, making it one of the most convenient meeting points for guided fishing trips in Southwest Washington. The lower Cowlitz through Castle Rock and downstream toward Longview is prime water for salmon and steelhead, with fish stacking up in the deeper runs and tailouts as they migrate upstream.
Andy frequently launches near Castle Rock when targeting the lower Cowlitz. This stretch of river offers excellent holding water where returning salmon and steelhead rest before continuing their push toward the hatchery and dam facilities upstream. The proximity to I-5 means anglers from Portland, Olympia, and Seattle can be on the water within minutes of arriving in town.
What You Can Catch Near Castle Rock
Winter Steelhead (December – March) — The lower Cowlitz around Castle Rock holds good numbers of winter steelhead. Side drifting through the deep slots and seams is the go-to technique on this stretch.
Spring Chinook (April – June) — Castle Rock is a prime launch point for spring chinook fishing. Back trolling herring and back bouncing eggs through the holding water below the hatchery produces some of the Cowlitz’s best springer fishing.
Fall Chinook & Coho (September – November) — Big fall returns push through Castle Rock’s water on their way upriver. Andy targets them with side drifting, hover fishing, and casting spinners depending on conditions.
Easy Access From I-5
Castle Rock is about 50 miles north of Portland and 100 miles south of Seattle on I-5. Andy meets clients at convenient launch points near town. The Cowlitz River also connects to the Columbia River just downstream at Longview, giving Andy the option to shift to Columbia River fishing when conditions favor it.
