Woodland Fishing Guide
Woodland is the gateway to the Lewis River — one of Southwest Washington’s most underrated fisheries. Located at Exit 21 on I-5, just 25 miles north of Portland, Woodland puts you within minutes of excellent steelhead and salmon water on both the Lewis and the Columbia River.
The Lewis River from Woodland upstream toward the hatchery offers a more intimate fishing experience than the larger Cowlitz or Columbia. Andy targets this river when conditions favor it — typically when the Lewis is running clear and green while other systems are blown out. Less boat traffic means more water to yourself and fish that haven’t seen as much pressure.
What You Can Catch Near Woodland
Winter Steelhead (December – March) — The Lewis produces quality winter steelhead in a smaller, more technical river setting. Andy side drifts and bobber dogs through the prime runs upstream of Woodland.
Spring Chinook (April – June) — Lewis River springers are a well-kept secret. Strong hatchery returns provide solid fishing with less competition from other boats.
Fall Chinook & Coho (September – November) — The Lewis gets respectable fall salmon runs. Andy targets them with a mix of side drifting and spinner casting through the lower river.
Close to Portland
Woodland’s location on I-5 makes it one of the closest quality fishing destinations for Portland-area anglers. Andy meets clients near Woodland when fishing the Lewis River or the nearby Columbia River tidal waters. The Columbia at Woodland is also productive for sturgeon and salmon, giving Andy the flexibility to put clients on the best bite of the day.
